Gresford disaster occured at approximately 2a.m. on September 22nd, 1934.
Gresford Colliery is actually nearly 2 miles away from the village of Gresford and very few villagers worked in that particular colliery, however 13 of the villagers were working in th mine on that shift and were killed in the disaster. Unfortunately the bodies were not recovered and so there are no graves in All Saints ChurchYard.
The reverend Canon David Griffiths commissioned a mural to be painted on the wall in St Margaret’s Chapel to the right of the altar; it has several scenes of the disaster and, underneath it, there is a book with the names of those killed and a page of this is turned each day.
After a long campaign, a memorial was built to the dead miners. The memorial was dedicated on November 26th 1982 in the presence of the Prince and Princess of Wales and the surviving relatives of those miners killed in the disaster. Since then an annual service has been held at the memorial every September
There are no invitations sent for the service at the memorial; people come because they care, not only those who lost a loved one. Canon David Griffiths has taken the service annually since the memorial was dedicated; it is probably the most important date in his diary. Two of his great uncles are down there and he himself did his training at Gresford before going on to work at Llay Main.
In addition a window was commissioned by Llay Miners' Heritage Centre in May 2012 - an email was sent to NWMAT:
"The window contains two pieces of work commissioned by us and designed by Derek Buick of Headland Design, Farndon. The first is a copy of the mural in Gresford Church in memory of the Gresford Coal Mine Disaster of 22nd September 1934. The second is a window blind containing the names of the 266 miners who were killed.
Canon David Griffiths will read the dedication Canon Pauline Walker of Llay will perform the blessing. It is hoped that the mayor and mayoress of
Wrexham will be in attendance."
