Cunnah's Level
History by Ithel Kelly
Opened in 1948, at Top y Cefn, Pentre Broughton, this level worked the Smith Seam (21 3" thick) and the Four Foot Seam. The latter was worked out whereas the former had persistent problems with flooding which, in 1957, resulted in the closure of the workings. Access had been made into the Drowsall Seam (believed to have been named after the Welsh expression 'Dyna dro sal' meaning 'That's a bad turn') which varied greatly in thickness and quality - perhaps the reason for the seam's name.
