Brynmally Colliery was sunk in 1770 and in 1849 was owned by Thomas Clayton and Co.  On 13 March, 1889 there was an explosion that killed 20 men and boys, including a 15-year-old boy called Peter Jones, who was remembered on a tapestry, now in Wrexham Museum.  The colliery closed in 1935.
